Sunday morning. Coffee and the paper. Homemade waffles. All was well in the world.
My daughter (14 years old) was off with a friend for an exercise class and then going out to breakfast. She returned about noon, was home a couple of minutes when I heard a shriek and those dreaded words that a parent hates to hear..."I left my retainer at the restaurant!" Mind you, not in plain sight on the table or her plate, but carefully concealed in a napkin. We immediately called the restaurant and they off course had not found it. I asked if we could go through the trash. Yep, thats what we did.
The Pancake house was very accommodating. The busboy even helped. I was amazed that the garbage wasn't even as gross as I envisioned. Pancakes absorbed alot of the syrup and it wasn't bad. We basically transferred handful of garbage from sack to sack. Was it in the bag we were going through or one that had already been dumped in the dumpster? Hoping...hoping...to find the retainer (actually two retainers - one top, one bottom). After about 15 minutes of rummaging through the sacks, I found one. VICTORY! Where there was one, there had to be two! After a few more minutes of rummaging Kate spotted the second! HALLELUJAH! We would not have to pay for replacements! (which would set us back close to $500).
Lesson learned - ALWAYS keep your retainer in plain sight on the table or in your pocket!
