My daughter turned 14 last fall. Her wish was to update her room so it wasn't so little girly. She had the white wainscoting with this adorable small floral wallpaper above it. I hung the wallpaper years ago and loved it. It was from England and just very feminine (and expensive). I wouldn't let her remove it or paint over it.
We came up with a great compromise. We found a fabric at IKEA that fit the bill. I bought 17 YARDS of it and stapled it up over the wallpaper. It really POPS on her walls. We both love it. It was horrible to hang, as I had to cut 3 inches off the top and bottom to accommodate the print. But it worked and can be removed down the road.
We then moved her bed up against the wall for more of a daybed and added lots of black, white and pink pillows. I covered the pelmets over the windows in a black and white graphic stripe. Her furniture was my furniture as a child and used to be painted white with the provincial gold stripe. (Too boring for her) We painted all the furniture different hues of the same pink paint color. (using all the 4 different paint colors on the paint chip)
Her light fixture was a old vintage one that came with our house...cute but not bold enough for the room. At our local antique mall, STARS we found a vintage fixture. It was painted yellow with coke bottom like orange and yellow centers in the flowers. I removed those centers and painted the whole fixture black. I like how the flowers repeat those on the walls. It had the big center light bulb which added to the funkiness we were looking for.
On the back of her door I covered a piece of cork board with some left over fabric. Added a magnetic strip and she had the perfect spot to hang her pretties. (the necklaces banged against the door without the cork board to cut down the noise.) Worked like a charm.
The whole room worked out really well. Her cousin was visiting a few weeks ago and said it was one of the "coolest bedrooms she had ever seen" and left wanting to revamp hers.
A groovy little piece of heaven for a 14 year old.
