One of the items that I make for my sales is jewelery boxes. I collect them all year long. You may have noticed from my estate sale Friday posts that a old jewelery box often appears...this year I found 17.
I am a little particular about the condition, especially the interior of the box. I use the top of the box as a surface for decoupaging...giving the boxes a whole new personality.
I like to use vintage images from cards and books. I color copy them so the paper is consistent and I often can't bear to use the originals.
or sometimes I use an image from the playing cards I collect.
I develop a theme for each box. Birds, cats, flowers, dogs, horses etc. I then cut out my images and arrange them on each box. I like to work on multiple boxes at once - production line style.
These have all had the cut out images decoupaged onto them. Easy peasy.
Here is a close up of one that has a pinky red floral theme - as well as a couple of cute images of girls.
After the decoupage glue is dry, I take Elmer's glue and paint it on the surface of the jewelery box leaving the images untouched. You can faintly make out the glue I have painted on.
While the glue is wet I sprinkle on glitter. It will cover the entire surface of the box and tidy the surface up.
This is a finished box. I use a spray Varathane to seal the surface after the glue is dry (do this in a well ventilated area). This keeps the glitter in place and makes a shiny finish.
Ready for treasures and jewels.
Here are a couple of other finished boxes for inspiration....
Playing cards featuring dogs...
Tweet, tweet...singing birds.
Twirling ballerinas.
